German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia

In the second half of the 20th century, North Rhine-Westphalia underwent a fundamental structural transformation, particularly in its geographic centre of the Ruhr region, from a mining region to a modern technological and industrial region. This transformation entailed profound social upheaval. As a densely populated conurbation, Germany’s industrial heartland, Europe’s number-one energy region and a European transport hub, the federal state faces particular challenges when it comes to tackling global issues of transformation. North Rhine-Westphalia intends to contribute its experience and expertise to help shape the pending global transformation and to utilise ideas from other regions of the world in its own transformation process.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federal enterprise with worldwide operations. We support the German Government in the fields of international cooperation for sustainable development and international education. Through our work we assist people and societies in shaping their own future and improving living conditions. Most of our work is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). However, GIZ also operates on behalf of other German ministries and public and private clients in Germany and abroad. We are active in areas ranging from economic development, climate change mitigation, food security, health care and education to providing advice in crisis and conflict situations. We operate in some 130 countries, employing more than 16,500 staff across the globe.
