German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia
In the second half of the 20th century, North Rhine-Westphalia underwent a fundamental structural transformation, particularly in its geographic centre of the Ruhr region, from a mining region to a modern technological and industrial region. This transformation entailed profound social upheaval. As a densely populated conurbation, Germany’s industrial heartland, Europe’s number-one energy region and a European transport hub, the federal state faces particular challenges when it comes to tackling global issues of transformation. North Rhine-Westphalia intends to contribute its experience and expertise to help shape the pending global transformation and to utilise ideas from other regions of the world in its own transformation process.
